Sketchy Reflective report

18th of March 2024

Read through the new document uploaded on Blackboard, to see if there is enough information there for people, then ask the class if there is enough information there for people to answer the brief appropriately.

Where am I right now?

In line with the mood board assignment, my interpretation of it was that we should have three Creative territories ready for presentation by the next class as that would be the proper progression of things, but I was still yet to get a clear picture of the type of data that was in the research paper and the way to approach the design whatsoever, so I went ahead to break down the data further by plotting a simple Bar chart out of it. Before plotting this chart, I was considering merging the two criteria (Severity and Prevalence), but, I realised after plotting the chart that the symptom with the highest severity or prevalence is different for each category. Thus, this simply means I'd have to have a graph for each of the categories in relation to each criterion, thus, I'd have 6 charts. So there'd be a "Prevalence of symptoms in Non-RRT treatment patients", "Severity of symptoms in Non-RRT treatment patients", "Prevalence of symptoms in Dialysis patients", "Severity of symptoms in Dialysis Patients", "Prevalence of symptoms in Kidney Transplant patients", and "Severity of symptoms in Kidney Transplant patients". The other option would be to isolate each symptom and plat the graphs around them. There's probably another way to convey this message but that's all I have so far.

The next thing I could do is to figure out how to communicate the HRQOL section as I do not necessarily understand the categories under it yet. Asides this, I should have sketches of both ideas for prevalence and severity and see which does a better job at communicating the information best, and possibly some proper sketches of the selected option, then placing these into a sort of a wireframe. Once this has been done. Figure out how to contact the researcher.

Sometimes, you have to throw out logic to produce a beautiful thing.

Iconography: Focusing on the part of the sport that conveys that information best.

The previous plan was to educate the audience about CKD and at the same time, tell them about the research, but considering how I won't be able to reference the works of other researchers asides the ones who made the CKD paper, it'd be best to simply convey just the content of the paper.

I came across a realization in class the other day, that it really doesn't matter that the infographic looks like the data-intensive ones I've seen so far, matter of fact, it can be whatever shape or form and contain a lot of text and a little text, the main thing is to make sure the audience find my content easy to understand and that it actually calls the attention of the people going into the Hive and doing everything in my capacity to bring that to fruition. It could even not have a lot of data on it.

General Mind Map for the Infographic Design

16th of February 2024

Where I am at this week: One of the things to achieve this week was to get a better understanding of the research paper that I've selected, which I've managed to go through as much as I could and have a much better understanding of it now. All these were of course to help me move forward with the design of my infographic, but I struggled a bit with figuring out how I was supposed to approach this particular brief, I mean, looking at examples of really good work, I couldn't figure out how those design decisions came about. Thinking about it now, I think what I need to do to have a better understanding of this is to firstly experiment with ideas and secondly, find various types of infographics to have an idea of how vast the concept of infographics is.

Reviewing infographics: What am I looking for?

What does my audience want: This questions what the audience would be interested in knowing and seeing. Firstly, let's consider how much time the audience would spend looking at the infographic, this most likely would be a rather short time, why? To start with, we can assume 1 out of 10 of them does not have this disease, and about the same percentage doesn't have a family member who has CKD. This means, their level of interest in the topic would be mostly low and a brief sighting and analysis of the poster at first sight would determine if they'd be spending more time there or not. This is a major factor in my design as my design is starting to be more of an awareness one, and not an awareness about the results alone, but an awareness of CKD itself, thus, the design has to be if anything really attention drawing such that, not the content is the criteria for evaluation which in this case would nullify the interest of most of the populace, but the design, in which the information manages to get across to the audience eventually.

For the assignment, I couldn't put up enough questions to satiate the task which means I still have not a clear idea of what exactly I'm doing, which I reckon is not necessarily a bad thing as this is the first time I'm doing something like this. I'd be able to find out more about it with time.

I have been ruminating for a while now as to what exactly the whole module (GDES) is all about, aside from the blatant infographic part which is making the a2 poster for the research. From speaking with Mr. Andy, I found it odd and a bit too simple that all we have to do for the whole module is to make a simple infographic for a research paper. From the 2 assignments we've been given so far, I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel as to the depth of tasks we are actually required to do.

So far, I know the following:

Goal: I am to act as a design agency and basically find the best way to represent the load of information to the audience such that it is easily understandable by them.

Objective

- Simplify the whole research paper.

- Make the poster

- Make a video for people to watch to get a better understanding of the whole infographic.

-Make a physical installation for people to interact with to bring the research into perspective.

Strategy

Simplify the whole Research Paper

- Read through the whole journal in 1 go.
